State cigarette excise taxes range from 7¢ per pack in South Carolina to a high of $2.575 per pack in New Jersey. The weighted average state cigarette excise tax rate is 95.3¢ per pack. This average does not include the 39¢ federal excise tax.

For FY2007, the states reaped more than $14.4 billion in gross cigarette excise tax revenues. States also received an estimated $7.2 billion in tobacco settlement payments.
